Bed-sharing with baby

If you're considering bed-sharing with your little one, it's essential to prioritize safety above all else. Bed-sharing can be a bonding experience and can make nighttime feedings more comfortable, but it needs to be done right. Here are some safe tips for bed-sharing to ensure you and your baby have a cozy and safe night's sleep.

Firm mattress and well-fitted bedding. Start with a firm mattress that doesn't sag. Soft, plushy surfaces can increase the risk of your baby rolling into an unsafe position. Keep the bedding minimal – a fitted sheet is all you need. No pillows, fluffy blankets, or stuffed animals in the bed.

Sleep on your back. Whenever you bed-share with your baby, make sure to sleep on your back. This position reduces the chances of accidentally rolling over onto your infant during the night.

Give baby space. Create a safe space for your baby within your bed. Use a separate, snug-fitting crib or bassinet mattress or a co-sleeper that attaches to your bed. Ensure that there are no gaps between the mattress and the edge of the adult bed where your baby could become trapped.

No smoking or alcohol. Avoid bed-sharing if you or your partner have been drinking alcohol, using drugs, or smoking. These substances can impair your awareness and responsiveness to your baby.

Breastfeeding benefits. Bed-sharing can be particularly beneficial for breastfeeding moms, as it allows for easy access to nighttime feedings. Breastfeeding has been shown to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Room temperature. Keep the room at a comfortable, cool temperature. Overheating is a risk factor for SIDS. Dress your baby lightly to avoid overheating, and consider using a sleep sack or swaddle instead of blankets.

Light covers. If you do use a blanket, make sure it's a lightweight, breathable one. Place it no higher than your waist, ensuring your baby's head and face are uncovered.

Eliminate gaps. Keep your baby between you and your partner to avoid any gaps or openings that could pose a suffocation risk. Make sure your baby can't fall off the bed.

No sofa or armchairs. Avoid bed-sharing on a sofa or armchair, as these are not safe surfaces for your baby. They have more cushions and crevices that can be risky for an infant.

Trust your instincts. Remember, if you ever feel too tired or uncomfortable, it's okay to place your baby in their crib or bassinet. Your well-being is just as important as your baby's.

Regular Check-Ins: Periodically check on your baby during the night to ensure they are safe and positioned correctly.

Bed-sharing can be a wonderful way to bond with your baby, but it's crucial to follow safety guidelines to minimize risks. Every family is unique, so what works for one may not work for another. Trust your instincts and prioritize your baby's safety, above all else. And remember, as your baby grows, their sleep needs will change, so be prepared to adapt your sleep arrangements accordingly. Sweet dreams, mama!
