Engorgement

The lowdown. Breast engorgement is when your ladies decide to go big and firm after your milk comes in. It's normal, but it can be a pain (literally) to deal with.

Tackling the issue

  • Nurse your baby often. It's like a pressure release for your breasts.

  • Warm and cold. Use warm compresses before feeding and cold packs after to ease the discomfort.

  • Comfy bras. Give your girls a break with a comfy, supportive bra. Save the lacy ones for later.

  • Express yourself. If baby isn't hungry yet, use a pump or your hands to express a bit of milk. Try hand expressing while taking a warm shower or bath to help relieve some pressure. Make sure you don’t express too much milk or you might signal to your body to produce more milk.

  • Cabbage leaves. Yup, you read that right. Stick some cabbage leaves in your bra – it's an old-school remedy that many swear by. The science behind it is a bit unclear, but hey, if it works, it works!

Red flags. If you notice redness, warmth, or run a fever, it’s best to check in with your doctor or nurse practitioner to get assessed.
